Consulting or coaching?

Consulting revolves around the successful completion of a specific project, not around the development of the person. A consultant analyzes the project and suggests a course of action that the person has the option of following. A consultant should have expertise in that particular field.

Coaching, in turn, centers on the coachee. More than suggesting solutions, the coach will help the coachee arrive to his own solutions. A good coach will make the right questions, which will lead the coachee in an internal journey to modify his personal beliefs, which will lead to good solutions and actions. The coach can have expertise in the particular field or not.

A good coach will also be an accountability partner for his coachee, accompanying him until the internal changed – which the coachee has committed to – has occurred.

¿Consultoría o coaching?

La consultoría se centra en el logro exitoso de un proyecto en particular, no en el desarrollo de la persona. El consultor analiza el proyecto y sugiere un curso de acción para lograrlo. El consultor debe tener experiencia en ese área en particular.

Coaching, en cambio, se centra en el desarrollo del coachee. Más que sugerir soluciones, el coach ayudará al coachee a llegar a sus propias soluciones. Un buen coach hará preguntas acertadas, que llevarán a que el coachee interiorice y modifique sus creencias personales, lo cual llevará a buenas soluciones y acciones conducentes a lograr el resultado esperado. El coach puede tener experiencia en el área en particular o no.

Un buen coach también será el “accountability partner” de su coachee, acompañándolo hasta que haya logrado el cambio interno que se ha comprometido a lograr.
